Off the Grid: Deflected Weft

Off the Grid is a series of one-day workshops exploring ways to create handwoven cloth with curves, bends and ruffles. Each workshop is complete on its own, but together they provide a portfolio of techniques for weaving unusual and interesting cloth on a 4-shaft loom.

This workshop focuses on the weave known as ‘honeycomb’. It is a structure which consists of small woven cells outlined in a contrasting weft: the weft bends around the cells to create the appearance of a honeycomb. Participants explore these effects by weaving samples with various weights of yarns and cell sizes, and we study the draft to see how the honeycomb is constructed.
