Mechanical Magic: Zigzags and Curves

What do I get?

You get lifetime access to our online resource pack for weavers who want to create zigzags and curves on a mechanical dobby loom. The pack includes video lessons and illustrated transcripts, dozens of downloadable drafts, and demonstrations of design tactics.

The resources are organised into three sections:

  • Core material: lessons on threading, pegplan and treadling strategies for zigzags and curves. These are presented as videos with accompanying illustrated transcripts you can download.
  • Downloads: 66 drafts for 8 shaft looms in WIF and PDF formats; another 66 drafts each for 12, 16, 24 and 32 shafts in WIF format. Yes, there are a lot of drafts!
  • Demonstrations: more videos, this time demonstrating design processes on paper and using Fiberworks PCW.

Do I have to have weaving software to use the resource pack?

You will need to have access to weaving software in order to use the downloadable drafts for 12 shafts or more, as these files are too large to present in a flexible, printable format. Some free and low-cost options are discussed in the resource pack, but if you want to think about it first then I recommend this page on Handweaving.net.

If you are weaving on 8 shafts, then the drafts are also presented as PDFs which you can view and print out from your browser.

I have a computer dobby loom. Is this pack suitable for me?

The short answer is no, I do not recommend this pack if you are weaving on a computer dobby rather than a mechanical dobby.

Having said that, you can certainly use the downloadable drafts as a basis for weaving on your computer dobby loom, while the video lessons will explain the structures involved and illustrate some useful processes in Fiberworks. But my intention with this pack is to help weavers make the most of their mechanical dobbies, and the design strategies I suggest are chosen to support that aim. For a computer dobby, alternative strategies would be more appropriate.

Of course, if that just makes you curious about mechanical dobbies and how they work, go ahead: you don’t have to provide proof of mechanical dobby ownership to take the class!

How much does it cost?

The self-study resource pack costs £35, inclusive of whatever sales tax is charged in your location.
Please note that, wherever you are, the price will be converted into US dollars before it is charged to your card.
